I-5 OVERPASS BRIDGE:

 DAR1 DESIGN ALTERNATIVE

The design alternatives for the overpass bridge were between I-beams and box girders. Since the I-5 freeway is a heavily occupied freeway, Optima Group decided to use box girders to support the overall deck of the overpass bridge because box girders support not only the maximum weight of the total loading from the deck, but also the maximum moment that would be created from the wind load and the live loads from traffic.

 DAR2 DESIGN ALTERNATIVE

The design alternatives for the overpass bridge were between I-beams and box girders. Since the DAR 2 Overpass Bridge is a curved road, Optima Group decided to use box girders to support the overall deck of the overpass bridge because box girders support not only the maximum weight of the total loading from the deck but also the maximum torsion that is created from the slope of the road. For abutment design, Optima Group has decided to use shallow foundations with wide footing instead of piles to reduce the cost of the project by reducing the amount of concrete that would be used.
