Since the San Elijo Lagoon is a highly productive ecosystem, Optima Group decided to go with the second alternative, since the lagoon disruption was more minimal. The first alternative included installing a pier within the lagoon which would cause many environmental issues, and endanger a variety of habitats within the San Elijo Lagoon.
